It presents the new system of parvovirus classification, as agreed by the International Committee for the Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), and includes cutting edge information on the virology, molecular and cellular biology, immunology and clinical manifestations of infection with each known and proposed member of the family Parvoviridae. The book also describes the rapidly expanding basic and clinical science which underpins gene therapy applications using helper-dependent and helper-independent parvoviruses. The respected editorial group has drawn together renowned contributors from around the world to produce what will undoubtedly become the standard reference on the subject. It is essential reading for clinical or research virologists and microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, and public health specialists and laboratories.

Product Details

* Hardcover: 656 pages
* Publisher: A Hodder Arnold Publication; 1 edition (January 26, 2006)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 9780340811986
* ISBN-13: 978-0340811986
* ASIN: 0340811986
* Product Dimensions: 10.9 x 8.3 x 1.4 inches
* Shipping Weight: 4.4 pounds

This edition carries on the tradition of CRC Press handbook excellence, listing the formulations, methods of preparation, and uses for more than 7000 microbiological media. With 1500 more entries than any previous edition, the handbook includes both classic and modern media used for the identification, cultivation, and maintenance of diverse bacteria, archaea, and fungi.

The breadth of culture media in this comprehensive resource is enormous and has greatly expanded in recent years with the exploration of extreme habitats and the use of molecular methods to identify new lineages of bacteria and archaea. The media also represent significant advances in the ability to use chromogenic substrates to identify specific species and strains of bacteria, e.g., E. coli O157 and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These media are extremely useful for clinical diagnostics and for the protection of the food supply from pathogenic microorganisms.

With over 7000 formulations, this new edition includes all the media used for:

* Routine examination of food and water
* Cultivating specific strains of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protists, including many anaerobes and extremophiles
* Cultivating the numerous microorganisms currently available from the world’s global bioresource centers (BRCs)

Additionally, many culture media are now available that are free of animal components. Plant based media eliminate possible contamination with prions, which is important for production of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.

The entries are arranged alphabetically by medium name and include composition, instructions for preparation, commercial sources, safety cautions, uses, and more. This reference contains the most comprehensive compilation of microbiological media available in a single volume. The only resource you need for all media types, it makes finding media for culturing diverse microorganisms quick and simple. With uniform presentations of media formulations and preparations, it presents easy-to-follow directions and cookbook recipes for preparing media. You won’t find a more complete or user-friendly microbiology reference anywhere.

Product Details

* Hardcover: 2040 pages
* Publisher: CRC Press; 4 edition (March 17, 2010)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1439804060
* ISBN-13: 978-1439804063
* Product Dimensions: 11.1 x 8.6 x 2.8 inches
* Shipping Weight: 7.4 pounds

Product Description

Published nearly ten years ago, the first edition of Practical Atlas for Bacterial Identification broke new ground with the wealth of detail and breadth of information it provided. The second edition is poised to do the same. Differing fundamentally from the first edition, this book begins by introducing the concept of bacteria community intelligence as reflected in corrosion, plugging, and shifts in the quality parameters in the product whether it be water, gas, oil, or even air. It presents a new classification system for bacterial communities based upon their effect and activities, and not their composition.

The book represents a radical departure from the classical reductionist identification of bacteria dominated by genetic and biochemical analyses of separated strains. The author takes a holistic approach based on form, function, and habitat of communities (consorms) of bacteria in real environments. He uses factors related to the oxidation-reduction potential at the site where the consorm is active and the viscosity of the bound water within that consorm to position their community structures within a two-dimensional bacteriological positioning system (BPS) that then allows the functional role to be defined. This book has an overarching ability to define bacterial activities as consorms in a very effective and applied manner useful to an applied audience involved in bacterial challenges.

Organized for ease of use, the book allows readers to start with the symptom, uncover the bacterial activities, and then indentify the communities distinctly enough to allow management and control practices that minimize the damage. The broad spectrum approach, new to this edition, lumps compatible bacteria together into a relatively harmonious consortia that share a common primary purpose. It gives a big picture view of the role of bacteria not as single strains but collectively as communities and uses this information to provide key answers to common bacterial problems.
About the Author

Roy Cullimore has a PhD in Agricultural Microbiology and went on to develop a number of patents, edited a series of books for CRC Press on Sustainable Water Wells, and has published in the area of applied microbial ecology. Cullimore was involved in deep-ocean research and presently has seven experiments on the RMS Titanic together with experiments on other ship wrecks to determine the rates of decay.
This edition well lives up to its name … . Overall, I rate this book as an extremely valuable resource … to the daily ELISA user. I recommend this book to all Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and trainees in Laboratory Medicine and that one copy should be available in every laboratory that makes extensive use of ELISA.” (Sujoy Khan, Immunology News, November, 2009) “The book describes the methods involved in heterogeneous enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) that provide ideal systems for dealing with a wide range of studies in many biological areas. … This method is widely using in various scientific and industrial areas … . provides a premier practical guide to the understanding and application of ELISA. Each method is described in great detail, and the whole book is an excellent manual for many researchers in biochemistry, molecular biology, immunochemistry, biotechnology, and medicine.” (G. Ya. Wiederschain, Biochemistry, Vol. 9, 2009)
Product Description

The Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) continues, as predicted, to be the predominant assay used in biomedical and agricultural research. While little has changed in the principles of the ELISAs used since the publication of The ELISA Guidebook, many technological advantages, including the increasing number of reagents available for exploitation and the larger spectrum of instruments to measure the coloured products of ELISAs, have greatly benefited the field. Other testing technologies using molecular techniques, predominantly the conventional and more and more often, real time PCR, are rapidly evolving to help diagnose and differentiate disease agents and identify substances present in exquisitely small amounts. The ELISA is still needed either alone in mass screening, such as serological assays, or used in tandem with molecular techniques to fully evaluate the molecular and antigenic nature of analytes.

John R. Crowther provides today’s premier practical guide to the understanding and application of ELISA. This Edition enlarges on charting methods for assessing the indirect ELISA, ruggedness and robustness of tests, aspects of kit use and validation, and internal quality control and external quality management of data. The author describes each method in great detail to ensure experimental success and includes advice on equipment choice, maintenance, and calibration. Wherever possible, helpful written explanations are provided along with copious diagrams.

With its numerous worked examples, detailed instructions, and extensive illustrations, The ELISA Guidebook, Second Edition offers a powerful synthesis of all the basic concepts and practical experimental details investigators need to understand, develop, and apply ELISA methodology successfully in day-to-day basic and clinical research.

Product Details

* Paperback: 581 pages
* Publisher: Humana Press (November 19, 2010)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 1617378844
* ISBN-13: 978-1617378843
* Product Dimensions: 10.2 x 7.6 x 1.3 inches
* Shipping Weight: 2.6 pounds
